Defying the odds in style, the Hutchings School overcame a stiff challenge from defending champions JN Petit to triumph in the Boys Under-17 Subroto Cup Pune Division final here on Monday, 13 August, 2013.
The title will hold special significance for the Hutchings as their 28-year old wait ended on Monday at the Rangehills ground in Khadki.
Incidentally, majority of Hutchings playing XI had players, who were champions of Under-14 category three year ago.
Defending champions Petit
started the match as they meant business, taking lead inside 90 seconds of the play.
Ninad Gajar latched on to a cross by Prabuddha Gaikwad to give Petit the lead. It was typical poaches goal on a defensive mistake from Hutchings.
However, Hutchings were level in no time as midfielder Ayush Singh bought them on level terms two minutes later with a neatly taken goal. Both teams struggled to construct a clear goal-scoring chance, resulting in a scrambled play till the half time.
The teams went into half time with parity, with Hutchings having an upper hand.
The team in blue, however, pressed forwards with their dominant possession and captain Chirag Shahaney stunned the opponents with a brave solo goal on the 34th minute. He burst through the Petit backline and slotted the ball past rushing keeper in an empty net.
Yet, to add twist to the game, Petit levelled the game via Gaurav Swaminathan, who deceived the Hutchings goalkeeper with a lobbed effort in the 50th minute.
Tension was high as the game approached fulltime, however, Hutchings captain Chirag seized his moment of glory with a stunning goal two minutes from the time to end Hutchings long wait for the title.
